ares clLarry S. Shiver, KJ5KFU, has accepted the position of Emergency Coordinator (EC) for Madison and Leon Counties in District 5 of the South Texas Section. District 5 comprises Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Robertson, and Washington counties. Mr. Shriver replaces Mr. Carl Collins, NT5CC, who passed away last summer. Larry’s appointment was recommended by DEC 5 Mike Wisby KA5HIA and is approved by Section Manager Mr. Stuart Wolfe KF5NIX.

Larry and his wife Karen, who have been married for 48 years, reside in Bedias, Texas. They have 2 daughters and 2 granddaughters.

Currently, I am holding a General class Ham License. I have held an FCC Commercial Radio license since 1983. In 2022, I received my FAA Certified Drone pilot license.

Other certifications include a Texas Master Peace Officers Certificate, a Texas Jail Administrator certification, and a Mental Health Officers certificate.

“I am a USAF veteran, specializing in Avionics, ground radio, and electronic systems.”

More recently, Larry is a retired Captain from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office

“I worked in commercial radio broadcasting for over 17 years and formerly did play by play and color for LSU in Baton Rouge, LA.”

“I have been in public service for many years and currently am assisting Madison County with communication and ARES assistance.”

Larry is a member of the Brazos Amateur Radio Club, ARRL, and World Radio League.

Larry is our first known beekeeper, as a member of Brazos Valley Beekeepers Association.

His hobbies include playing and recording music, motorcycles, DIY building projects, beekeeping, and ham radio.

This appointment is effective May 9, 2025.
