Making the call; Local ham radio operators participate in Field Day

The American Radio Relay League hosts Field Day every June, and the Pontotoc County Amateur Radio Association joined in to compete Saturday and Sunday.

Field Day is open to all licensed radio amateurs. The goal is to set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio’s science, skill and service to communities and across the nation.

“This is the ARRL Field Day,” PCARA President Art Osborne said Saturday. “There are different levels that you can do on Field Day. You can be on house power, you can be on batteries or a generator. and that all make a difference on how you are graded.”

This year PCARA selected the Irving Community Center for their part of the event.

The nationwide event extends from noon Saturday through 3 p.m. Sunday.

“We will see how many contacts we can make, and how far away those contacts can be,” Osborne said.
