Mac, Meet Winlink

Mac, Meet Winlink

After years of anticipation, Winlink just announced the official release of MacWinlink, a native macOS Winlink client for Apple computers. It will support the following modems: AX.25 Packets, KISS TNC’s, Telnet and ARDOP.

Additional software will be supported by easy to install plugins or as they call them “helpers” to extend support to Vara FM, Vara HF, Direwolf and RigCTLD.

MacWinlink is currently available as a public beta through Apple TestFlight. Mac users with Apple Silicon Macintosh computers running macOS 15 or later are invited to participate in testing. If you have a Mac and are interested in joining the beta test program, please visit the official link for more info.

  1. I don’t own a Mac this year.. But I am a huge fan of the past 2 generations of Apple silicon. Their CPU’s are blazingly fastb & RAM allocations is far more impressive than Intel or AMD. Currently my daily driver is an HP Envy X360 with an Intel I7 and 64GB of RAM Running Arch Linux. But I have a tiny liitle SSD of only 256GB.

I’m not a Mac user; my son had to buy a Mac to do code testing for a specific type of library programs he is working on (you have to ask him; if you’re not a computer nerd, prepare for eyes glazing over). We have an old Mac by our front door; it’s there in case of burglary – if it’s grabbed, no big loss. HA!

If Mac now has a version of Winlink; why won’t they port it over to Linux? Makes no sense, as there are far more Linux users than Mac users; and Linux is great for development of apps for a wide-ranging community, including Ham operators.

I started playing with Pat on linux. It has forms, so it may be a good alternative until Winlink is ported to Linux. I just saw a video of the authors and he didn’t sound like he was going to port it any time soon.
