Modernizing the Texas ARES Net Log: A Technical Overview

The Texas Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) relies on robust, accurate, and accessible communication records. To support this vital mission, we recently developed a state-of-the-art Texas ARES Net Log web application, packed with dynamic features designed to streamline data entry, improve readability, and offer advanced print capabilities for official record-keeping. The modernization beyond the below highlighted features is the fact that the system uses a database and not a spreadsheet. On with the show and tell of the features…

Historical Log Selection

Log Selection DropdownUsers can easily navigate historical data using a convenient dropdown selector to jump between different net log dates.

Interactive District Mapping

Interactive District MapOnce viewing a log, interactive elements take center stage. For geographical context, every district name in the table header is clickable, triggering a smooth animation that reveals an exploded view of the counties included within that specific district.

Member Profile Integration

Member Profile IntegrationFurthermore, we’ve made networking seamless. Participants who are already registered members on arrlstx.org are visually highlighted in the grid. Clicking their call sign instantly pulls up their full user profile directly on the screen.

Advanced Print Formatting

Finally, we dedicated considerable coding time to perfect the physical documentation experience. When you print the log, the system automatically defaults to a clean landscape mode. More importantly, it dynamically splits the massive data table across multiple pages, ensuring absolutely no data is cut off or lost in the margins.

Great tools like this are only possible thanks to the tremendous effort and time contributions of Jeffery A. Walter – KE5FGA our ARRL STX SEC, thank you Mr. Walter! On a side note, he also publishes these logs directly to the Groups.IO system regularly. If anyone has any comments or suggestions for improvement, please post them at the bottom of this page.
