Assumptions = Mistakes

Assumptions = Mistakes

A few days ago someone asked if we could get a list of some of the EmComm systems displayed to monitor the status. I did a web search and pulled together what I assumed was correct. Boy was I wrong! My info was correct, just not a full exhaustive list.

As it turns out Tom N5TW has been keeping track of these systems since before I even got my ticket. He has been doing it before Baofeng even made their first radio! His page is linked on this site in the About Us section, if you want a link from here you can click the little image of his page to the left. My hat is off to Tom and my appreciation goies out to him for all his year of work and upkeep. You see he has not simply linked to a server to get a ping update, but he has been keeping a separate hand curated list as well. So if a node goes offline for a few days they are not purged from the list automatically, requiring someone resubmit all the additional details and notes that the servers don’t track! That is a ton of dedication to the hobby and the service, thank you sir.

The only downside is the fact that his list presents 174 nodes of which 93 are not actively reporting, most have been offline for more than 1 year. That’s a list which is only 46% accurate. I have rewritten the app and it is also now found (just below N5TW’s) in the About Us section. You can go to the ARRLSTX version by clicking the image on the right side of this page. Tom did a great job on the technology for its time, it is on easy tracking dozens and dozens of machines and publishing their online and runtime status. The improvements we brought you are as follows

  • Instant real-time data sync using websockets – no need to refresh or see the page flashing
  • District Based Grouping, as well as sorting by call sign, frequency etc.
  • Station Summary Cards as shown in the image below
  • Various filters to get the data you are looking for as well as search ability.
  • Some modern cosmetics and a dark mode that is easy on the eyes.
  • Widgets, counters and animations for easier digestion of key metrics

I hope some of you can get some use out of the effort. If there are features or functions you think are missing let us know just by commenting on the website and we will do our best. On a side note: Tom’s data was imported into our version of the app and you can see his by clicking the button at the top right of our app But our cosmetic changes will not revert to the other era. Lastly, I ask for the forgiveness of posting the other app before I understand the pre-existing infrastructure. I will seek advice prior, next time.
